SUMMARY:Motivational Interviewing and Neuroscience of Stress
DESCRIPTION:Stress is often perceived as solely an emotional experience\, but decades of research demonstrate its impact on physical health and wellbeing. We will explore the neuroscience explaining how stress manifests in humans and how\, through intentional use of Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills\, we can help the people we work with mitigate stress at the psychological\, physical\, and epigenetic level. \n  \nMany MI skills and tools naturally lead to stress reduction. MI is based on the principle of meeting people as equals and experts on their own lives\, with a desire to empower them. This approach eliminates the need for power struggles that can exacerbate environmental stressors. MI is also highly relational\, activating pro-social areas of the brain. An MI exploration of intrinsic motivation highlights personal values\, which can lead to organic changes in perspective and subsequent actions. \n  \nThe highly interactive format of this course will increase your ability to work intentionally with MI Spirit and specific MI skills to quickly de-escalate situations\, build collaborative partnerships\, and set achievable next steps. \n  \nObjectives \n\nReview MI Spirit and OARS skills\, with a focus on reflective listening\nExplore the science of stress as a mind-body experience with common health impacts\nDiscover the elements that make MI an interpersonal stress management approach\nLearn how to use MI to de-escalate interactions and build partnership\nPractice real-world scenarios from your scope of practice\n\n\n  \nPrerequisite \nA working knowledge of MI Spirit\, OARS skills\, and Change Talk are prerequisites for this class. \n  \nLearn more and register! \n  \nAdditional Training: Motivational Interviewing I on September 15 and Motivational Interviewing II on September 29. \n  \nTrainer \nLisabeth Gutierrez Bennett\, NBC-HWC\, NCTTP\, NCNTT\, Training Director\, CODAC Behavioral Healthcare\, administers CODAC’s Motivational Interviewing training initiatives and oversees programs related to tobacco and nicotine treatment. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT)\, developing and facilitating training tailored to a wide variety of medical\, behavioral health\, and social service agencies nationwide. The relationships she was able to make during that time gave her a unique opportunity to step into the role of coordinator/manager of the state’s Peer Recovery Support Specialist certification program. After 8 years of working in the PRSS program\, she was able to use her peer support and wellness coach skills to manage the Oklahoma State Employee Assistance program during the stressful years of the pandemic that served all state of Oklahoma workers.
