SUMMARY:Motivational Interviewing and the Stages of Change
DESCRIPTION:We often hear the expression\, “Meet people where they are”\, but what does that actually mean? How can we skillfully do this without losing sight of the forward growth and change that will lead them to their best life? \n  \nThe Trans-theoretical Model\, commonly known as the Stages of Change\, describes the states humans find themselves in as they consider\, make\, and maintain changes. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a flexible communication tool kit that promotes connection\, collaboration\, and mobilizes inner and outer resources. This highly interactive\, intermediate-level training integrates the two\, provides practice in identifying the Stage of Change as it shifts\, and offers a menu of practical MI skills to work effectively within each stage. \n  \nObjectives \n\nIntroduce the Transtheoretical Model\nLearn to use client language and behavior to identify Stages of Change\nReview MI Spirit’s role in creating impactful\, supportive relationships\nPractice stage-specific MI interventions\n\n  \nPrerequisites \nPrevious MI training and/or working knowledge of MI Spirit\, OARS skills\, and Change Talk. \n\n  \nLearn more and register! \n\n  \nAdditional Training: Motivational Interviewing I on April 14 and Motivational Interviewing II on April 21. \n  \nTrainer \n\nLisabeth Gutierrez Bennett\, NBC-HWC\, NCTTP\, NCNTT\, Training Director\, CODAC Behavioral Healthcare\, administers CODAC’s Motivational Interviewing training initiatives and oversees programs related to tobacco and nicotine treatment. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT)\, developing and facilitating training tailored to a wide variety of medical\, behavioral health\, and social service agencies nationwide. Her boots-on-the-ground experience translates into impactful\, practical training programs that help participants increase their competence and confidence when helping others. \n  \nWith a clinical background in health coaching\, she holds the National Board Certification in Health and Wellness Coaching\, National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice\, and National Certification in Nicotine and Tobacco Treatment. Beth is a trainer for the internationally accredited Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) certification and co-author of the University of Massachusetts Medical School TTS training curriculum. SUMMARY:Advanced Ethics for Certified Peer Recovery Specialists
DESCRIPTION:This advanced ethics training is designed for experienced Peer Support Specialists to meet their biannual ethics training requirements. Building upon the Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) training content\, this training moves beyond basic “rules” and into the nuanced ethical decision-making that is required when working with vulnerable populations. \n  \nParticipants will explore ethical gray areas that commonly arise in peer roles\, including boundaries\, dual relationships\, power dynamics\, self-disclosure\, and confidentiality\, through a trauma-informed\, peer-led lens. Emphasis is placed on protecting the peer relationship and person served without sacrificing authenticity\, mutuality\, or any of the core values of peer support. This training centers ethical practice as ongoing skill development\, not a checklist that can be achieved. It promotes self-awareness\, reflection\, consultation\, and a willingness to live in the gray in the face of ambiguity. \n  \nLearning Objectives \n\nDescribe all key components of the RI Certification Board Code of Ethical Conduct\nIdentify ethical gray areas and ways to navigate them effectively\nExplain the importance of strong boundaries in peer support work and practices in effectively setting and keeping them\nDescribe the importance of supervision in both preventing and addressing ethical dilemmas\nIdentify the process for filing an ethics complaint and setting expectations for participation if warranted\nApply critical thinking skills and peer values to real life scenarios to promote learning and ability to handle ethical concerns as they arise in peer work\n\n\n  \nLearn more and register. \n  \nTrainer \nElizabeth Black\, LADC\, has spent her career working with and on behalf of people with behavioral health disorders. She holds a master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling and is a Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor. She serves as subject matter expert\, trainer\, and technical assistance provider for behavioral health and recovery initiatives. Her areas of interest and expertise include harm reduction\, medication for opioid use disorder\, rural healthcare systems\, and health and wellness in recovery. Prior to her current role at C4 innovations\, Elizabeth worked for the Department of Mental Health for the state of Oklahoma for over a decade. In her work there\, she oversaw the implementation of health and wellness interventions into behavioral health services statewide. Her background includes developing recovery support frameworks\, strengthening family- and community-based behavioral health services\, and supporting the implementation of evidence-based and emerging practices for organizations serving people with complex needs. Her current focus areas include community and family recovery\, wellness- and prevention-based approaches to behavioral health\, and culturally responsive engagement that honors lived and living experience. \nJill Amos\, MHR\, has spent her career working to support both clients and workers in the behavioral health care system. As a woman on her own mental health recovery journey\, she has tremendous gratitude for the individuals she has met through her work that she believes made her who she is. Prior to working for C4 Innovations\, she worked for the State of Oklahoma’s Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) as a direct care\, community-based case manager with adults diagnosed as having severe mental illnesses. From that work\, she recognized and began her own mental health recovery journey and interest in advocacy. She continued into her career as a consumer/patient advocate for ODMHSAS gaining experience with Oklahoma’s mental health law and conducting site visits at substance use and mental health treatment centers statewide to connect with both clients and workers. The relationships she was able to make during that time gave her a unique opportunity to step into the role of coordinator/manager of the state’s Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) certification program. After 8 years of working in the PRSS program\, she was able to use her peer support and wellness coach skills during the stressful years of the pandemic to manage the Oklahoma State Employee Assistance program that served all state of Oklahoma workers. She now works for C4 Innovations\, Inc. and loves using what she learned in her work to connect with people all over the country to share ideas about recovery and wellness.
