More than 65% of people with a substance use disorder have at least one co-occurring mental health condition. Common co-occurring conditions are depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and bipolar disorder. People with co-occurring disorders can be more challenging to treat due to the complex nature and impact of these conditions on their overall functioning. Integrating treatment of both conditions is critical as is helping the person identify motivational goals and strategies.
